Chapter 18
Skye scrambled to her feet. “Okay, Callen, it’s time to put your money where your mouth is.”
“My money where my mouth—?” All he could think about was where his mouth had been just moments before.
“You claim you can ride a horse. Let’s see you do something besides sitting up there and letting her do all the work. I’ll race you back to the stables.”
“Forget it, sweetheart. I told you I suck at this.”
“Yeah, but I want to see how badly you suck.”
“Gee thanks.” Nick staggered to his feet to help her scoop up the remains of their breakfast and the blanket and tuck them back into Gypsy’s saddlebags.
“Ready?” She smiled up at him.
“What do I get?”
“Get?”
“Yeah. If I’m going to risk life and limb by racing you on the back of a horse, I want to know what I get if I win?”
Skye’s mind went blank for a moment and the words spilled out of her mouth. “What do you want?” Damn her mouth anyway. Not only did it spit out rude things without thinking, but now it was betraying her.
“I think you know the answer to that.”
She felt her face flush and had to give herself a good jolt of common sense to stop herself from grabbing the blanket, throwing it back down on the grass, and giving him exactly what he wanted.
“Are you sure you want to risk losing?” he asked.
Damned right she was. She might even be tempted to throw the race. But common sense and a large dose of inhibition prevailed and told her to get back on her horse and ride out of there. “Me lose? Not a chance.”
He stepped closer to her, staring down at her, and she wondered when he’d grown those extra few inches. “And if you win? What do you want?”
She cleared her throat and struggled to think. Want? What did she want? Wasn’t it obvious? The exact same thing he did. “A slave for a day,” she managed to squeak out. “You do anything I tell you to do for an entire day. Think you can handle that?”
Nick laughed at the irony. Hadn’t he been handling that for five months? “I can handle anything you dish out, Sweet Pea.”
She raised a single eyebrow in disdain, one of the gestures he’d fallen in love with the first time he’d seen her. What was it that caused her to do that during their first three minutes together? Oh, yeah, when he had asked for directions and, due to her distracting attributes, she’d had to repeat them three times.
Once back in their saddles, Skye established the starting line for their race.
“You really think it’s wise to race on the trail?” Why was he even doing this? He’d had trouble staying on Gypsy at a trot.
“Done it numerous times,” she said.
“When you were a novice?”
“When I was eight years old.” Fully aware that this was entirely unfair, she wondered why she’d even suggested it, unless it was to distract them both from what was stirring between them.
